Week 9, Task 2: The Digital Divide

I don't think the existence of Wenger or Prensky's theories will affect the digital divide. If people do not have access to the technology needed in order to access the internet etc, then it is impossible to know how much of a difference this will make to the digital divide, if any at all. In third world countries for example, there are a lot less computers and facilities that will allow users access to the internet in the first place, let alone teach them how to use it effectively. These countries simply do not have the economy or government funds to set up a better educational system that is available to all of the population when compared to the majority of the western world.

The same problem exists across the world. Whilst the internet is globally available, you still need to be in an area that receives internet coverage and have a pc and network connection in order to use it. The introduction of wireless technology would allow access a little easier but it still requires a signal nearby to be used for the service. So overall I think before we look at how much these issues affect the digital divide we should look at how much of the world is actually able to access these technologies.
